The forgotten war

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. This conflict has led to a severe deterioration in security, humanitarian conditions, and the overall stability of the country.

The war erupted following deep political and military disagreements between the country's military leaders, who had assumed power after the fall of the previous regime in 2019. Tensions rose particularly around the integration of the Rapid Support Forces into the national army—a key component of the democratic transition process supported by the international community. When talks failed, armed clashes broke out in the capital, Khartoum, and quickly spread to other regions, including Darfur and Kordofan.

The consequences have been catastrophic. Thousands of civilians have been killed, and millions have been displaced both internally and across borders. Government institutions have collapsed in many areas, the healthcare system is in ruins, and access to basic services is extremely limited. The conflict has also given rise to widespread lawlessness, looting, and serious human rights violations.

Economically, the country has suffered a major blow. Commercial activity has come to a near halt, the national currency has plummeted in value, and transportation between cities is largely disrupted. Many banks and businesses have shut down, and international investments have fled the country.

Despite repeated calls from the United Nations, the African Union, and other regional and international organizations for a ceasefire and a return to negotiations, both sides have failed to commit to lasting peace agreements. This has further deepened the crisis and prolonged the suffering of the Sudanese people.

The current war is one of the worst humanitarian disasters in Sudan’s history. It has torn apart communities, displaced millions of families, and crushed hopes for a peaceful, civilian-led state.

Ending this conflict will require a genuine political will, an immediate halt to hostilities, and an inclusive national dialogue involving all stakeholders. Only through such efforts can Sudan begin to rebuild and move toward lasting peace, justice, and development.
